Project Activities

Stage 1 included the design, tendering and construction of the first wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for Tirana, a trunk main to discharge the wastewater to the WWTP, connection and rehabilitation of existing overflow works in the existing main sewers and an extension of the existing sewage network.
To assure a sustainable operation and management of the sewerage facilities, the project also included technical and institutional capacity building of the General Directorate of Water Supply and Sewerage (DPUK) through the transfer of knowledge and training. For the promotion of house connections and the raising of public awareness, an education campaign was also planned.

Prior to this project’s implementation, Tirana lacked a wastewater treatment plant and the raw sewage was discharged directly into the Lana and Tirana rivers, running through the urban centre of Tirana. The project focused in sustainably enhancing the water quality of the Lana and Tirana River by reducing pollution and decreasing the proportion of untreated wastewater as well as improving the environmental and sanitary conditions through ensuring universal and equitable access to sanitation services.
The project also included targeted capacity building supporting the General Directorate of Water Supply and Sewerage in water- and sanitation-related activities.
