Description

The project’s primary objective was to improve the health and living conditions of the people in Qena City and overall, the Qena Governorate by rehabilitating and upgrading the water supply and sanitation infrastructure. Ultimately, the project aimed to achieve equitable access to safely managed drinking water services thus reducing the number of illnesses and deaths due to unsafe water consumption
Generally, this involved:

  • The provision and extension of a secure water supply distribution system.
  • Metering of water production and consumption (IWA water balance)
  • Development of a non-revenue water reduction strategy which in turn substantially increased water-use efficiency  saving energy and contributing to climate change protection
  • Implementation of a comprehensive subscriber survey for improved revenue collection
  • Improvement in energy efficiency
  • Strengthening the performance capabilities and improvement of services of the Qena Company for Water and Wastewater (QCWW)  by implementing effective and targeted capacity-building in water- and sanitation-related activities

The project focused on 16 pilot areas in Qena City, El Wagf, Nagada, Qift and Qus with an estimated population of 200,000 inhabitants and approximately 30,000 house connections. The total area covered was approximately 2,500 ha.
